I absolutely Love Marilyn Monroe...to me she represents Glamour, Sophistication and Sex Appeal, however as an African American woman, she doesn't represent me!!! In the spirit of Black History Month I want to shed light on an All American black beauty named Dorothy Dandrige who has been overlooked and shadowed by Eurocentric figures such as Ms. Monroe. I think of all the black female rappers who name themselves after Marilyn Monroe but forget that African Americans also have a figure just as sophisticated, sexy and beautiful. Looking at the pictures of Dorothy Dandridge makes me extremely proud to be represented by such a beautiful person who paved the way so that actresses such as Halle Berry and Nia Long, can be as successful as they are today. She was so multi-talented, not only being a groundbreaking actress and the first black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award but a singer as well. Classy and the epitome of Beauty are two ways to describe Dorothy Dandridge. I wish images of her were reprinted and glamorized in posters like they are of Marilyn Monroe so I can put them all over my room wall but they are not. It could be a race thing however I know when I go into stores to buy posters Ms. Dandridge isn't there and that is disheartening. To celebrate her and her achievements Halle Berry produced and stared in a Hbo film "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" about her life which I will never forget. It was an amazing film that dealt with the racial injustices she had to face as well as the many barriers she broke to make it to where she was. Among some of Dandridge's major roles were "Carmen Jones" and "A day at the Races."She was an extraordinary person that deserves recognition for her accomplishments.
The Civil Rights Movement is one of my favorite topics to learn about. To see college students like myself in the 60's singlehandedly change the world so people like me can be in school and not have to endure racisim and segregation is powerful. Sometimes I feel like we are letting those that came before us down because we are lazy. By no means do we live in a utopian society where racism and discrimination fails to exist. If you look at the difference in wages between women and men alone you will understand that discrimination is alive and well. Blacks all over the United States came togeher to fight the injustice of racism and segregation. Imagine if THEY weren't brave....where would we be now? Would we still be in shackles or chains, would our men still be getting lynched, or would we still be forced to live in a segregated society? I shutter to think these thoughts, however whenever I watch brave individuals partake in revolutionary movements such as the Civil Rights Movement, I am empowered. It also makes me appreciate the time I live in now. I can go to school with other people who are not black but white, I can vote in important elections, I can even have dinner at a restaurant without being kicked out because of the color of my skin. These are things many black people take advantage of. We undermine the reality of the African Americans that came before us who were abused or killed for the sake of an education; The blacks that were hosed down and beaten down so they can vote or sit down at lunch counters. These are things that my generation take advantage of because some of us don't even know our history. We don't know the struggle it took for Booker T. Washington to receive an education at Hampton University or the hardship Ida B. Wells faced trying to end Lynchings in the South. We don't appreciate the hard work and effort endured by the people who walked or carpooled for over a year during the Bus Boycotts or the countless amount of blacks jailed because they were fighting for rights rightfully deserved to them. As an African American the struggle did not end during the Civil Rights movement, Its a constant struggle for us. To live your life without even picking up a book about your own history is disheartening. Once again, my question is where would we be if THEY weren't brave?
I hate to love Valentines Day, even though I am not in a committed relationship, actually I am completely and utterly single I know that one day, maybe even years from now, I will have the most wonderful, love filled valentines day a girl can ever ask for, with the love of my life, where ever he is. Today gave me an excuse to tell all my friends I loved them and to create a play list on my ipod filled with all my favorite love songs ranging from the Temptations -Just my Imagination, to Luther Vandross I'd Rather have...I also went on a Valentines Date with Adanech and we drank margaritas and talked about the prospects of love and happiness while eating chocolate covered strawberries. I really can honestly say I had a fulfilling valentines day. The highlight of my day was seeing the growth in myself, getting the courage to text old flings and actually getting wonderful texts from other old flings...I hate to see people bitter about this day. It sucks the life out of what Valentines Day is supposed to be. Its a beautiful day to appreciate those people we love and care about even if it's only a friend or a family member...I love it...Happy Valentines Day to all....
Some people they call me crazy
For fallin' in love with you
They can take me and lock me away baby
Cuz there's nothing those bars can do
I'll be the rising moon after the setting sun
Just to let you know you'll always have someone
I'll be the clear as day when the rain is done
So you'll always know
Through the shake of an earthquake
I will never fall
That's how strong my love is
Like a ship through the storm
we can risk it all
That's how strong my love is
I used to feel kinda lonely
Cause the world can be so fake
All it matters I'm tellin' you
It's you and me only
And the fortress from love we make
I'll be the water you need
in the desert land
Just to let you know you'll always have my hand
I'll be the woman you need to be a better man
So you'll always know
Through the shake of an earthquake
I will never fall
That's how strong my love is
Like a ship through the storm
we can risk it all
That's how strong my love is
Ooooh Can nothin' break us down
Oooh Cuz we are heaven bound
Like a mountain standing tall
Immovable we're here to stay
Ooooh Can nothin' get in the way
Through the shake of an earthquake ( I will never fall)
I will never fall ( I will never fall)
That's how strong my love is (that's how strong my love my love is)
Like a ship through the storm
we can risk it all (We can risk it all Ooooh)
That's how strong my love is (Looove is)
Through the deepest waters I won't let you drown
That's how strong my love is
There's a balloon in the sky that'll never come down
That's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is
In the spirit of Valentines Day, I have to share this song...If I could describe it in one word I would say Beautiful. Every time I listen to this song I shed a tear. Alicia Keys really outdid herself. The love she feels for her significant other exudes from the lyrics. I want to love someone this much some day, where our love can surmount over everything and everyone...Love!
Baby, baby, baby
From the day I saw you
I really really want to catch your eye
There's something special 'bout you
I must really like you
Cause not a lotta guys are worth my time
Ooo baby, baby, baby
It's gettin kind of crazy
Cause you are takin over my mind
And it feels like oooooo
But you don't know my name
And I swear it feels like ooooo ooooo ooooo ooooo
You don't know my name
Round and round and round we go, will you ever know
Oh baby baby baby
I see us on our first date
You're doin everything that makes me smile
And when we had our first kiss
It happened on a Thursday
Ooooo it set my soul on fire
Ooo baby baby baby
I can't wait for the first time
My imagination's runnin wild
It feels like ooooo
You don't know my name
And I swear it baby, it feels like oooo ooooo ooooo ooooo
You don't know my name
Round and round and round we go, will you ever know)
"I'm sayin, he don't even know what he's doin' to me
Got me feelin' all crazy inside
I'm feelin like"
Owww! Ooooo Oooooo
Doin more than I've ever done for anyone's attention
Take notice of what's in front of you
Cause did I mention you're 'bout to miss a good thing
And you'll never know how good it feels to have all of my affection
And you'll never get a chance to experience my lovin'
Cause my lovin' feels like ooooooo
You don't know my name Round and round and round we go, will you ever know
And I swear it feels like oooo ooooo ooooo ooooo
You don't know my name
round and round and round we go, will you ever know)
Ohhh
Will you ever know it, no no no no no
Will you ever know it?
"I'm gonna have to just go ahead and call this boy.
Hello? Can I speak to to Michael?
Oh hey, how you doin?
Uh, I feel kinda silly doin' this,
But um, this is the waitress from the coffee house on 39th and Lennox
You know, the one with the braids?
Yeah, well I see you on Wednesdays all the time
You come in every Wednesday on your lunch break, I think
And you always order the special, with the hot chocolate
And my manager be tripping and stuff
Talking bout we gotta use water
But I always use some milk and cream for you
Cause I think you're kinda sweet.
Anyway you always got on some fly blue suit
'n your cufflinks are shining all bright
So, whatchu do? Oh, word? Yeah, that's interesting
Look man, I mean I don't wanna waste your time but
I know girls don't usually do this,
But I was wondering if maybe we could get together
Outside the restaurant one day
Cause I do look a lot different outside my work clothes
I mean we could just go across the street to the park right here
Wait, hold up, my cell phone's breakin up, hold up
Can you hear me now? Yeah
So, what day did you say?
Oh yeah, Thursday's perfect, man:."
And it feels like oooo
You don't know my name
Round and round and round we go, will you ever know
Baby Baby I swear it's like oooooo
You don't know my name, no no no
Round and round and round we go, will you ever know
And it feels like oooo
You don't know my name
Round and round and round we go, will you ever know
And I swear on my mother and father it feels like
Oooo ooo oooo ooo ooo ooo
Oooo ooo oooo ooo ooo ooo
Oooo ooo oooo ooo ooo ooo
You don't know my name
Round and round and round we go, will you ever know?
Nostalgia of Love...in the spirit of Valentines day I feel like I should share the song that commenced the first time I ever fell in love before I even knew I was in love. This song till this day gives me chills because it describes my life at age 14 desperately seeking attention from a boy who didn't know I was alive, until finally we met, fell in love and the rest is history. This song is so near and dear to my heart and I am more than happy to share it with everyone on this Joyous day we call Valentines Day...Alicia Keys makes some of my favorite love songs...
I dated a guy for two years and the most memorable moments we share were filled with fun and laughter. Whenever we came together I always had fun with him. All we needed was a joint and some liqs. I remember going to Sugarcane with him and having a wonderful meal filled with an amazing conversation. I remember being able to dance all crazy in front of him and he would just laugh, then 5 minutes later he was dancing all crazy in front of me. I also remember going to the park swinging on some swings and just talking about life.We really enjoyed each other's company. Thats the beauty of easy going relationships. Not only is your significant other your lover but they are your friend. Establishing friendship within a relationship is so important to me because once the relationship has dissolved there is still a chance of always being connected through friendship and I love that. I still keep in contact with all my ex boyfriends. I can honestly say I am friends with every last one of them and I am proud of that. Just because you didn't work as a couple doesn't mean you should just ex out all possibilities of a friendship. Some of these guys in my life mean so much to me that I don't want them to completely disappear after a breakup. Nevertheless, I feel that having that easy going relationship with a guy, filled with fun is amazing. I remember going to the club with the same guy and we had the time of our lives. There was no jealousy, no suffocation just dancing and laughing all night. I always used to tell him that the true test of our relationship would be us going to a strip club together and to be honest I know we would've had a blast because that's the type of relationship we had. I love the type of relationships where you can just be yourself. Fart, burp, laugh obnoxiously, dance crazy, say weird things and just enjoy life. Thats the true essence of being young and being in lust. I saw this picture and immediately thought of the fun aspect of a relationship. Beyonce looks so care free, so hip, so young and Jay Z compliments her with his cool laid back swag. I love it. To be young and in love is an amazing thing.

"Southern summers are indifferent to the trials of young love. Armed with warnings and doubts Noah and Allie gave a remarkably convincing portrayal of a boy and a girl traveling down a very long road with no regard for the consequences"
"She had come back into his life like a sudden flame, blazing and streaming into his heart. Noah stayed up all night contemplating the certain agony he knew would be his if he were to lose her twice."
"My Dearest Allie. I couldn't sleep last night because I know that it's over between us. I'm not bitter any more, because I know that what we had was real. And if in some distant place in the future we see each other in our new lives, I'll smile at you with joy and remember how we spent the summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds, and that's what you've given me. That's what I hope to give to you forever. I love you. I'll be seeing you. Noah.~"
"I am no one special; just a common man with common thoughts, and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone who's ever lived: I've loved another with all my heart and soul; and to me, this has always been enough."
"So, it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be really hard. We're gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? Thirty years from now, forty years from now? What's it look like? If it's with him- Go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again, if I thought that's what you really wanted. But don't you take the easy way out"
Girl it's been a long, long time comin', yes it has
But I, I know that it's been worth the wait
It feels like springtime in winter
It feels like Christmas in June
It feels like heaven has opened up it's gates for me and you
Every time I close my eyes
I thank the lord that I've got you
And you've got me too
And every time I think of it
I pinch myself cuz I don't believe it's true
That someone like you loves me too
Girl I think that you're truly somethin', yes you are
And you're, you're every bit of a dream come true, yes you are
With you baby, it never rains
And it's no wonder
The sun always shines when I'm near you
It's just blessing that I have found somebody like you
Ooh Oh
To think of all the nights I've cried myself to sleep
You really oughta know how much you mean to me
It's only right, it's only right
(In my life) that you be in my life right here with me
Oh baby, baby, yeah
"One Love"
You know I have to be honest
It's like for the first time in my life,
My pride is not a problem
I'm not afraid
I'm not afraid to tell you girl,
That I love you
Believe that
And if I cant have you,
I don't know what ima do
Listen to me So many people never find the one
That's why I really wanna tell you somethin'
I really think this is it for me
I really think you're the one I need
Cause baby I done had 'em all
I don't want nobody but you
Yeh, Oh darlin'
Baby let me break it down
See, we livin' in a lonely world
Aint you tired of the runnin' 'round?
Don't you wanna be my only girl?
Baby can I be the one to call
When you're tired of the lies
And the truth is all you wanna hear
Only if you swear Baby, here I am (here I am)
I'm your man (I'm your man)
I came with everything you needed
You and me undefeated,
Till the end of time
One mind, one heart, one love
All you gotta do is,
Take my hand (take my hand)
We will stand (we will stand)
This was made to last forever,
So lets say it together for the rest of time
One mind, one heart, one love Ohh, Listen baby
I'll give you all I'm worth
From my head down to my shoes
And girl if we gone work,
Then I need the same from you
I know that so many other dudes cheat
But so many dudes aint me
Give me my pick of any dime
And I'll pick you girl every time
I just wanna break it down
See, we livin' in a lonely world
Aint you tired of the runnin' 'round?
Don't you wanna be my only girl?
Baby can I be the one to call
When you're tired of the lies
And the truth is all you wanna hear
If you swear
Baby, here I am (here I am)
I'm your man (I'm your man)
I came with everything you needed
You and me undefeated,
Till the end of time
One mind, one heart, one love
All you gotta do is,
Take my hand (take my hand)
We will stand (we will stand)
This was made to last forever,
So lets say it together for the rest of time
One mind, one heart, one love Ohh, Love is hard to find
But love is one of a kind
And I got mind
So if you got yours,
Then you know what your livin' for
This goes out to all my lovers tonight
And if you listenin' to my groove,
And your baby's next to you
Tell 'em
'You are all I need and I'll never let go'
You are all I need and I'll never let go
(Never let go of you)
And here I am (here I am)
I'm your man (I'm your man)
I came with everything you needed
You and me undefeated,
Till the end of time
One mind, one heart, one love
All you gotta do is,
Take my hand (take my hand)
We will stand (we will stand)
This was made to last forever,
So lets say it together for the rest of time
One mind, one heart, one love
Ohh ohh ohh ohh, oh yeah
You are all I need and I'll never let go
Ohh, Love
Love, love
Tell 'em
You are all I need and I'll never let go
Trey Songz "Ready" album to this day is one of my favorites...I can listen to it on repeat...pure amazingness but I remember when I first heard the album and listened to this song it gave me chills because all I could think was wow, I want a man just like Trey...The part that captured my heart was "See, we livin' in a lonely world/Aint you tired of the runnin' 'round?/Don't you wanna be my only girl?" This song should be the theme song for all couples. Its so powerful and its in my opinion one of Fabolous best. The words are amazing, talk about complementing one another. This is definitely a fave.
"I want to be the Claire to my Heath Cliff...the Michelle to my Obama" I remember when I thought this very statement a couple of months ago and the rest is history. My driving force in life is to ultimately end up with a significant other who empowers me. My dream is to be able to grow with this person through love and encouragement. I want to be made better, while in the same token making them better...I want to be apart of a Power Couple. Power Couples are those couples that are the envy of them all because they actually have it all, the money, the career and Love. Some say its impossible to have it all but these notorious power couples which include Beyonce and Jay, Swizz and Alica as well as Gabrielle Union and Duane Wade prove to us that its possible to essentially have it all in the name of love. If I'm going to spend the rest of my life with someone we have to be growing towards a goal. I know I am a career-oriented person thus I don't expect nothing less from my husband. The Obama's inspire me. They are the epitome of how I imagine marriage life to be. Two ivy league trained individuals, who both graduated from prestigious law schools, and became lawyers...one essentially became the President of the United States, the other became The First Lady of the United States and through it all if it wasn't for Barack's backbone, Michelle I shutter to think if he could of done it without her. Commencing from 1980s The Cosby's broke barriers in the perception of how black families were or had the potential to be. Claire Huxtable, the sassy, beautiful lawyer who was the mother of 5 kids and still looked like a model. Heath Cliff Huxtable, the lovable, comedic doctor who's main goal in life was to love his wife and love his children. These are the couples that set the standards for how true love essentially should be and I don't expect nothing less. When I see Beyonce and Jay Z living their lives on yachts and vacationing all over the world, I get chills in my spine because that's my dream. Not necessarily as extravagant as them however I want to enjoy the company of my husband before rushing off to have children. I want to travel with my husband and live life to the fullest. In order to attain this we have to set standards for ourselves and for our potential mates. One day a boy I really liked told me he wanted to be a doctor and I was blown away. Usually you hear guys saying they are working towards a rap career and thats fine but its very rare you see someone working towards such a noteworthy goal and that made me like him even more. If I am going to spend 3 years in law school I want my potential mate to at least be ambitious, know what they want in life and to be working towards attaining that goal, its only right. Power Couples inspire me to the utmost extent. Why would I settle for anything less?

Truth Is... Ran into an old friend yesterday
Caught me by surprise when he called my name
He was a familiar face, from a chapter in my past
Talked for a while, asked him how it's been
Said that he was seeing somebody and
Told me this was gonna last
Showing me her photograph
And all the feelings that I thought were gone
Came rushing back to me at once
Tried to smile and hide the way I felt
But I was thinking to myself
Truth is I never got over you
Truth is Wish I was standing in her shoes
Truth is And when it's all said and done
Guess I’m still in love with you
Truth is I never should have let you go
Truth is And it's killing me cuz now I know
Truth is And when it's all said and done
Guess I’m still in love with you
We reminisce on the way things used to be
Shared a couple laughs, shared some memories
Talked about the things that changed
Some for good and some for bad
Then he said good-bye and he paid for lunch
Promised that we'd always keep in touch
Grabbed my bags and grabbed my thoughts, walked away and that was that
And all the feelings that I thought were gone
Came rushing back to me at once
Tried to smile and hide the way I felt
But I was thinking to myself
Truth is I never got over you
Truth is Wish I was standing in her shoes
Truth is And when it's all said and done
Guess I’m still in love with you
Truth is I never should have let you go
Truth is And it's killing me cuz now I know
Truth is And when it's all said and done
Guess I’m still in love with you
Now the truth is it hurts but I know that the fault is mine
‘Cuz I let him go
Tried to get over it but it's messin' with my mind (Because I know)
Truth is I never got over you
Truth is Wish I was standing in her shoes
Truth is And when it's all said and done
Guess I’m still in love with you
Truth is I never should have let you go
Truth is And it's killing me cuz now I know
Truth is And when it's all said and done
Guess I’m still in love with you
I just gotta be honest, I guess, I-I guess, I’m still in love, in love, in love
Is it weird that today I am feeling exactly what this song is saying...truth is im still in love with you the only thing "you" doesnt know that im still in love...so sadddd...ahhhhh
Must not of been paying attention
I stepped right on in it, didn’t even notice how deep I was
I went from the ground to the top of the cloud
And now as I look down I see where I fell into your arms
Now I got love all over me
Baby you touch every part of me
Ooo I got love all over me
And I don’t want to get it off
I’m completely covered up in your love
Even my skin is changing ooooooooooo
I’m feeling woman no more icy blue hearts for me
You put the color back in my life
And now where there was black and white you’re becoming iridescent
I got love all over me
Baby you touch every part of me
Ooooo I got love all over me
And I don’t want to get it off
I’m completely covered up in your love
Before your love baby I was blinded
To think we painted you took it from me
You showered me with a new beginning now I’m clean
Took me by surprise when you ran up on me
I came to life baby in that moment
You put your hands on my heart baby now it beats
Now I got love all over me
Baby you touch every part of me
Ooooo I got love all over me
And I don’t want to get it off
I’m completely covered up in your love
In your love
In your love
And I don’t want to get it off I’m completely covered in your love
Ohhh I……
In…. your …… Love
From the first time I heard this song, I knew I wanted it to be the first song on my wedding day...it is simply gorgeous...I remember when I would watch this video and would cry, sometimes uncontrollably because the song is so beautiful and the concept is amazing, torn between your first love and the new love of your life. Its amazing and definitely one of my favorite love songs.
Circle
Yeah
You know it's funny
seems everytime I, try to forget about you
my feelings bring you back in
it's crazy
'cause I got somebody else
and you got somebody else
but you and I both know
how it really is
but still you know what I'm saying b?
Ran across a picture you took of me
and you crossed my mind
I still hear you saying you love me
when I close my eyes
If I didn't go away to school
Then where would we be
Probably still together and somewhere happy
If I'm supposed to be moved on in a new relationship strong
Then why are you still haunting me?
They say
if you love something let it go
and if it comes back then that's how you know
I got to the stop light then I made 4 rights
now I'm back where I started
and you're back in my life.
The further I go the closer I get back to you
I say I moved on till I'm reminded of you
can somebody help me
help me get out of this circle
get out of this circle?
I drove past your house the other day
I didn't even mean to I went the wrong way
I ain't seen your mama in a while
When she looked at me she smiled
and asked me if I'm doing OK
Took everything I had not to bring up your name
and wonder if you came home for the holidays
she asked if I could stay a while
'cause you had come in town,
and you were just five minutes away
If you love something let it go
and if it comes back then that's how you know
I got to the stop light then I made 4 rights
now I'm back where I started
and you're back in my life.
The further I go the closer I get back to you
I say I moved on till I'm reminded of you
can somebody help me
help me get out of this circle
get out of this circle?
Everybody who's listening to this
if you got that person that makes you wonder what if
Let me hear you say yeah
(yeah)
say yeah
(yeah)
say yeah
(yeah)
hoa yeah (hoa yeah)
If you understand how I feel
then grab that person now and let 'em know what's real
let me hear you say yeah
(yeah)
yeah
(yeah)
yeah, ahahah, hoa
If you love something let it go
and if it comes back then thats how you know
I got to the stop light then I made 4 rights
now I'm back where I started
and you're back in my life.
the further I go the closer I get back to you
I say I moved on till I'm reminded of you
can somebody help me
help me get out of this circle
get out of this circle?
With all my heart I love you, baby
Stay with me and you will see
My arms will hold you, baby
Never leave, 'cause I believe
I'm in love, sweet love
Hear me calling out your name, I feel no shame
I'm in love, sweet love
Don't you ever go away, it'll always be this way
Oh your heart has called me closer to you
I will be all that you need
Just trust in what we`re feeling
Never leave `cause baby, I believe
In this love, sweet love
Hear me calling out your name, I feel no shame
I'm in love, sweet love
Don't you ever go away, it'll always be this way
No stronger love in this world
Oh baby no, you're my man, I'm your girl
I'll never go, wait and see, can't be wrong
Don't you know this where you belong
Sweet, sweet and lovely baby
Stay right here, never fear
I will be all that you need
Never leave, `cause baby, I believe
In this love, sweet love
Hear me calling out your name, I feel no shame
I'm in love, sweet love
Don't you ever go away, it'll always be this way
Still in love...
I'm still in love with you
Still in love
Listen...
Oh what can I do girl
So much in love girl
But your friends got you thinkin'
And it's affecting you
What can I do girl
So in love girl
And I don't know what to do
'Cause I don't wanna lose you
No what would I do without your love
Baby it's heaven sent from above
So you don't believe
What your friends tell you about me
I'm still the man for you
And I'm still the man that's true
And I'm still the man who's lucky
And I'm still in love with you
It don't matter what your friends do
They're just jealous of me and you
And I'll always keep you happy
'Cause I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love
Time passes so fast babe
I wish it would last babe
'Cause I know in my heart
That my life ends and starts with you
And baby I know that this feeling
I'm feeling just won't let me go away
'Cause you're the first true love I've ever known
So what would I do without your love
Baby it's heaven sent from above
And I know that in my heart
I'm the best for you
I'm still the man for you
And I'm still the man that's true
And I'm still the man who's lucky
And I'm still in love with you
It don't matter what your friends do
They're just jealous of me and you
And I'll always keep you happy
'Cause I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love
Oh what can I do to right this wrong
I know that it makes me happy
To be in love with you
So...
I'm still the man for you
And I'm still the man that's true
And I'm still the man who's lucky
And I'm still in love with you
It don't matter what your friends do
They're just jealous of me and you
And I'll always keep you happy
'Cause I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love
No one loves you (like)
Like I love you girl
I still love you
I'm in love with you
I'm still the man for you baby
I'll always keep you happy
I'll always be there baby
'Cause I'm still in love
I'm still in love with you
Slavery! Sometimes at the most random moments I sit in disbelief with the thought of how a whole race was oppressed, beaten, tortured, traumatized, dehumanized, ridiculed, raped, murdered, threatened, and denied their rights because of the color of their skin. Slavery is defined as a civil relationship whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his life, liberty and fortune. I cannot fathom a time in American History where black people were not even considered human beings but chattel, 3/5th of a person this however was the reality for years. 1865 marked emancipation for slaves but the legacy of slavery haunts us to this day. Blacks on a socioeconomic level are not where they should be. We are struggling, and forced to thrive with poor living conditions in underdeveloped neighborhoods, inadequate school systems and low employment levels. Single parent homes are the norm in black communities, strong, resilient black mothers play both mommy and daddy while fathers run around refusing to take responsibility and are unfazed that they have a child without a dad in this world. During slavery the separation of the black family was the norm. Mothers taken away from their children, fathers taken away from their families, children sold off to other plantations without a trace...But before I jump to the legacy that slavery has left on the world, I want to address slavery from the beginning. Commencing from the beginning of the slave trade, whites went over to Africa to kidnap and enslave blacks. Their tactics were brutal and many Africans turned against their own people, with the assurance that they would not be sent to America. Africans were violently separated from their families, their village and the only culture they ever knew. They were shackled, sometimes together with hard, cold iron that was very uncomfortable and left unruly marks on their bodies. The slave capturers sought after Africans who were fit to work and were very strong. They were to have flawless bodies and they were to be healthy. These captives were placed in Slave Ships and journeyed through the Middle Passage. The Middle Passage was horrendous. Slaves packed on top of each other, for weeks and even months. Women raped, men emasculated and many suicides occurred. Slaves were not even allotted the necessary means to use the bathroom so they were forced to go in the same vicinity where they slept, ate and was surrounded by other slaves. The stench of the ship was reported to be vile. The middle passage was a living death, but this hell on earth was just the beginning. Once they reached America they endured eternal hardship for the rest of their lives. Slavery is unfathomable. Slaves were beaten, whipped, over worked, denied compensation, denied an education, malnutritioned, tortured, and overall oppressed. Women were raped by their slave masters regularly even though black and white relations were taboo. It was very common for black women slaves to be preyed upon by their slave masters especially the house slaves. The Black man's life was based upon emasculation during slavery because they could not come to the help of the victimized women; possibly because they couldn't help themselves. Blacks were denied the right to read and on some scales to practice religion or get married. After major rebellions like the one caused by Nat Turner, blacks attending church services were seen as a potential plot against slave masters etc. If a slave was caught reading or writing, they were whipped. An educated slave posed a threat to the white man. An educated slave knew that the institution of slavery was morally wrong and would try to rebel. White slave masters believed slaves should be content with their situation, hence the stereotypical "contented slave" ideology. Slaves ought to be grateful for the clothes on their backs, the shelter and food provided for their livelihood according to slave masters. However an educated slave would know how skewed this expectation was. Educated slaves would also have more of a chance to escape to freedom. Some slaves were so caught up in this idea of freedom because to them freedom meant starting their lives and gaining opportunities that were denied to them. Many slaves sought and found freedom, while others died dreaming of it. Another part of slavery that proved to be detrimental to the self-perception of all blacks until this day was the white man's clever ability to manipulate blacks to turn against each other. Many plantations deemed the darker hue slaves to work the fields while the lighter hue slaves worked in the house. The field slaves, woke up at dawn and didn't stop working until the sun went down. They were supervised by the overseer who whipped them if he witnessed any discrepancy. Slaves were given a scarce amount of food and clothing. Conversely house slaves were the domesticated slaves. They looked after the children, cooked meals, sewed and helped the slave master as well as his wife with all aspects of their lives. It is known that house slaves were preyed upon by their masters, subjected to rape more and scorned by the mistress. Some say slavery has perpetuated the idea of Colorism which reflects the conflict that many cultures and races including blacks have with skin color. Slavery has had many detrimental effects on society as a whole. Even though slavery ended in 1865 its legacy is strong and will live forever. We can never forget our ancestors who came before us and suffered the hardship of such a tumultuous institution. We can never forget the sacrifices they faced so we could be born on this earth free to be a human being and in control of our lives. Free to read, write and to attend college. Free to practice religion or get married to any race we want and free to be in charge of our own destiny, not a destiny of servitude predisposed for us.
